Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as just a young girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the juries. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
